Charles Green’s new Rangers team took to the field in Brechin and opened a whole new chapter in Scottish football.

The result of this cup game, Green’s men won 2-1 after extra time, was almost secondary in the tale of the Ibrox club resurrected under the banner ‘The Rangers’.

The two biggest beneficiaries, outwith Charles Green’s newco, are cup sponsors Ramsdens and the Gaelic language who have both been provided with a profile neither could have hoped for after BBC Alba won the rights to show the game.

The Gaelic commentary was provided against a backdrop of Union flags and the odd “The cry was no surrender” and “Rule Britannia” in a cultural mix that would have baffled a foreigner.

In an ironic twist, newco Rangers fans displayed a banner proclaiming that the SFA and the SPL were “corrupt to the core”.  The Newco are themselves seeking to avoid penalties imposed on the previous Ibrox incarnation who were themselves a tad less than pure.

New Rangers are playing Division Three football this season and judging by this scrappy performance against Second Division Brechin City, Rangers fans will probably be relieved that Ally McCoist’s men weren’t allowed to remain in the SPL after all.

They looked like a Division Three team, and struggled to break down a very ordinary Brechin City.  Brechin City ‘ahune’ Rangers ‘ahune’ told this non-Gaelic speaker that the score was one each for most of the second half and indeed remained so at the end of ninety minutes.

Lee McCulloch’s headed winner in the first period of extra time spared McCoist’s blushes and sent drenched Gers’ fans home happy.  A dreadful game played in dreadful weather was over.

New Rangers had opened the scoring after just four minutes with a goal from Andrew Little making history – one for quiz teams in years to come.  In a twist that future quizmasters will have some fun with, Little isn’t yet an official Rangers player, and played in this game as a trialist.

However plucky Brechin showed they weren’t there as bit part players with an equaliser late in the first half from Andy Jackson.

The second half saw Rangers dominate possession but create few clear cut chances in a game that got worse as time wore on.  Passes went astray and cards were brandished by Mr Salmond (George Salmond) who handled the game pretty well.

Rangers were denied a strong penalty claim late in the second half and looked to be tiring as extra time loomed.  However Brechin were denied their opportunity to travel to Ibrox for a replay when McCulloch headed a corner kick into the net.

Ally McCioist’s men are back, where they go from here remains to be seen.  On Friday, notwithstanding disagreements over outstanding sanctions, oldco Rangers’ SPL share finally transfers to Dundee and Scottish league football can return to some semblance of order.

Rangers: 'Some decisions driven by bigotry', says Charles Green

Yep, this is the headline quote from Charles Green. He says that the SPL clubs, under pressure from their own fans, had to vote TheRangers (let's get the name right please!) out of the SPL.

Quite how that makes it 'bigotry' I'm not quite sure.

I'm organising a whip round to get Green a dictionary for Christmas. Possibly Gordon Matheson can take Green along to the next Orange Order meeting as a practical demonstration of the term.

Like the lost tribe this cacophony will be visiting grounds around Scotland for the immediate future treating innocents to the sash their fathers wore and other delightful historical relics.
Camera close-ups of Rangers supporters abusing Brechin players and making obscene and abusive gestures at them were interesting and illustrative.

Oh, the delicious irony of the The Rangers fans singing 'Rule Britannia' and 'God Save The Queen'

It's clear that 'fans' of The Rangers have not changed in any way, shape or form, or learned a single thing after their previous clubs death.

"the odd “The cry was no surrender” and “Rule Britannia” "

Isn't there a law against this?
What sort of a way is this for a new club to behave after it has been invited to play in the SFL.
"Strike one" ought to be declared I think.

A law against singing "Rule Brittania"?

While many of us may wish for this, I doubt it will be forthcoming!

No surrender definitely covered here - and possibly the other too!

Agree, it all sounds......well how best to discribe it...old,dated,a cringe?
The Rangers fans have the perfect chance to change. All newspapers and other media should highlite this and embarrass the fans into stopping.
I think now is the time to just laugh when they sing those songs. Or cheer ironically. :-)

Who really cares?

The best answer to the problem of Rangers is to stop mentioning them or their deluded fans.

What is:
1. Glasgow Rangers will cease to exist on or around the 3rd of August
2. Sevoc (trading as 'The Rangers') will take their place in the SFL Divison 3
3. Deluded is as deluded does - rather than being 'victims' they are damned lucky not to be out on their uppers
4. Humility is clearly out of the question now the ramblings of Doncaster and Reagan have been consigned to the dustbin of history and the attempts by the Scottish media to ignore the plight of the ex Rangers employees, suppliers, self employed tradesmen and other football clubs who have royally been ripped off by Rangers FC.
5. In the sixties we were told that Scottish Football was doomed when Third Lanark went bust. The reality is the killing off Glasgow Rangers would have had the same long term impact - one of historical interest.

Respect to Brechin City for approaching the game as just another winnable game against Div3 opposition. Nothing in it in the end, could have gone either way, the boys done great.

It must be a concern for TEFKAR that they have not shed the bigot element from their support. They would have hoped that the fans that followed them to the basement might have attended the games because they liked football.

BTW, how come the crowd was 4,123 when the official capacity of Glebe Park is 3,960?

Did they cut the hedge too low?

# Edna Caine 2012-07-29 22:48
The hedge is still in place, immaculately manicured.

It being still a vaguely green colour, it is unlikely that many of the visiting fans would wish to be associated with it.

Vast numbers of Sevco backroom staff must be counted.

Not really a football fan, but happened to see a bit of the match. I was just thinking it was like a breath of fresh air to see this kind of low-key football, in a small football park with local fans, the sort of thing you might take your family to see.....then the Rangers fans started the tribal singing. It seemed quite surreal, so out of time and out of place....they didn't seem to realise that their type of bigotry tends to have relevance mainly in the Glasgow area and that there are many parts of Scotland where sectarianism has little meaning and the concentration is actually on the actual sport itself, rather than a tribal affiliation. The Rangers fans just wound up looking a bit sad, I thought, whereas the other team came across as the real sportsmen.

# Etrigan 2012-07-30 01:15
Yes, I felt the same as I watched the game. Just think of the good will they would get if they ditched all the sectarian rubbish. The romantic struggle as they climb back up the leagues. Giving all the lower league sides a little boost to their profile and bank balance.
One can but live in hope.

Greetings from Raleigh, North Carolina. When I followed Meadowbank Thistle to such lovely grounds as Glebe Park, the supporters changed ends at half-time. I suppose that was out of the question today?

I have to agree with Mad Jock McMad. Sevco is extremely lucky not to be playing in a Glasgow pub league this season.
