Media claims of an increase in anti-English racist attacks in Scotland have been described as “irresponsible and wrong” by the Scottish government.

The criticism follows publication of new figures last week which showed an increase in racist attacks in Scotland under the category “white British”.  The figures were reported by sections of the Scottish media as evidence that anti-English racism was on the increase.

However analysis of the figures has revealed that attacks against ‘white English’ actually fell in the last year in all police force areas which were able to provide a breakdown of the statistics.  The revelation has led to the Scottish government angrily denouncing the media coverage.

The statistics, which cover six of Scotland's eight police force areas, have emerged after the Scottish Government undertook further detailed analysis of the racist incident statistics which were released last week – and which led to some misleading and incorrect media interpretations of the data.

This further analysis shows that, for the six forces for which a breakdown is available, the number of racist incidents recorded by the police against people categorised white English victims fell by 17 per cent in 2011-12.

Meanwhile, racism against Scottish white victims increased by a quarter during the same period.

The analysis excludes Grampian and Strathclyde, as due to differences in recording systems these forces were unable to provide data giving a more detailed breakdown.

Cabinet Secretary for Justice Kenny MacAskill said:

"All racism is abhorrent whoever the victims are and it will not be tolerated anywhere in Scotland.  No community or group should be subject to discrimination and abuse because of their ethnicity, nationality or beliefs.

"This further new analysis shows that, where these more detailed statistics are available, racist attacks against white English people in Scotland are going down, and have decreased by 17 percent last year.  That decrease is to be welcomed, but there will be no let up in our efforts to drive down the number of racist incidents across the board.

"I encourage anyone subjected to a racist attack to report it to the police in the confidence that their complaint will be taken extremely seriously.  We are working tirelessly to tackle all forms of racism and discrimination.  Tough enforcement through record numbers of police officers on our streets, together with community engagement and education, can and will have an impact.  Together we can make a difference and ensure that modern Scotland is a tolerant and welcoming society for everyone."

The initial report of a ten per cent increase in overall racist attacks included an increase in the ‘white British’ category of 23 per cent.

The new statistics led to headlines in several newspapers suggesting the rise was evidence of anti-English sentiment in Scotland.  The headline in the Daily Record read: ‘MSPs demand action is taken after figures reveal anti-English racism is on the rise in Scotland’ whilst the Herald claimed there was a ‘Fear anti-English racism on rise’.

The media reports were seized on by Unionist politicians with Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie saying: “We cannot allow anti-English rhetoric to creep into society and the SNP Government must do all it can to combat this.

“While racism against some ethnic groups is falling, it is still far too prevalent in Scottish society.

“This includes racist abuse directed towards the English, which cannot be tolerated.”

The claims were also reported by BBC Scotland with the issue featuring on the Call Kaye Radio Phone in with host Kaye Adams claiming that “anti-English sentiment” was “up fifty per cent apparently over the last seven years” and linking the rise to politics.

The programme featured several callers making allegations of anti-English abuse with claims that the SNP were the cause.  Others claimed that supporters of Scottish independence “used” anti-English sentiment as an excuse.

The North East of Scotland was compared with Bavaria 1932, in a clear reference to the rise of Nazism, with the SNP again being blamed for anti-English "bullying".

A spokesperson for Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill added:

“It was irresponsible and wrong of certain media outlets to portray a rise in racist incidents against white people as an increase in anti-English discrimination when the original statistics release did not support that claim – and as this further analysis shows such attacks have actually gone down.

“Any racist incident is unacceptable, against any individual or group, and will not be tolerated. Politicians and the media have a serious duty of care to report and portray these figures in an accurate and responsible way.”

This site has made a great difference to my life. I have noted on other forums that anyone quoting Newsnetscotland is immediately a target for vociferous attack, ridicule, and contempt by NO supporters. You are obviously doing something right! A whole thread I was involved with in Cornwall was removed by the moderator after a complaint, when I mentioned your name, with a link to the McCrone report. The guy who instigated the discussion told me the moderator claimed it had broken the rules. The whole thread! I guess telling a few truths comes under that heading. Enjoy your Christmas break. You deserve it.

A merry Christmas and a guid new years to all at Newsnet. Keep the staff party civil mind. :)

As for the article, are we really that surprised that the Westminster parties would play the race card? They've levelled accusations of xenophobia and nazi party leanings since day one. Luckily in this instance they leapt before they looked and have been left with an eggy face.

There is no avenue, however low, they consider out of bounds. If it's negative, if it portrays either the independence movement or indeed Scotland in a bad light, they'll use it. There's only one way to end it. Vote yes.

All the the best to the NNS team, and many thanks for the efforts over the past year.

This latest effort seems like another attempt at fearmongering, probably aimed at people who have moved from England.
A simmilar article in the Scotsman looks as though it had backfired on them after it was shown that some of the unionist commentators had previously shown ill feelings towards Polish people and the Gaelic language. The article was pulled fairly quickly.

It should anger everyone that yet again the poison has been put in by the BBC and MSM, (even although a "regional" like the Herald is hardly Main Stream).

Hatred is being targeted and spread in and against Scotland by the BBC and MSM, of that there is no doubt. Real laws are long overdue to control their vile propaganda.

# farrochie 2012-12-17 08:49
Did the newspapers learn nothing from the Leveson inquiry? Accuracy and truth still seems to be concepts that don't interest the journalists. They are living in a past where they think they can feed bs to the public, but the numbers prepared to buy this keech is dwindling by the month. Confined to their offices, tied to the Press Association newswires, they haven't realised we can check the facts on the web. Journalists have lost their credibility.

Interesting that the "media" regard Scots and English to be separate races.

# Taysider 2012-12-17 11:23
I understand that the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in Scotland has ruled that English and Scottish are for the purposes of the law different races so any anti-English nastiness can be dealt with ounder racial equality laws and quantified. I understand too that the CRE south of the border does not admit that that Scots and English are different races so anti-Scottish sentiment in England cannot be dealt with under racial equality laws and quantified.

# bringiton 2012-12-17 12:49
Maybe that's why most of the media are based in England,so that they can publish anti Scottish bile with impunity.

# James01 2012-12-17 10:13
According to the Unionist’s logic, or should that be lies, this website should be full of anti-English comments, yet it isn’t, you’d be loathe to find a single comment of such a nature. Yet if you venture onto the Daily Mail or Guardian’s website you’ll see their comment section filled with truly awful anti-Scottish rhetoric whenever they cover an independence related story. Funny how the Scottish media doesn’t highlight that. Thank you NNS for being a bastion of sanity throughout the year.

# rapid 2012-12-17 10:15
One of the most positive things I've heard from the YES campaign was the idea of "Scottish Identity" not being uniquely tied to an individuals origin or roots.

Certainly makes sense because 3 people I know who are fervently YES and identity themselves as Scottish have roots or origin from Finland, Pakistan and England.

I love this about our culture. It is so welcoming to all.

# soutron 2012-12-17 10:45
Absolutely @rapid, I think that's the key aspect of the Scottish form of nationalism...inclusion for anyone who wants to be a part of it (and even those who don't!). Scottish is a state of mind. That needs to remain a big part of the campaign to ensure that nobody feels marginalised or alienated.

And yes, some of the anti-Scots rhetoric in MSM comment sections is horrendous. I'm living in England at the moment for work and you'd be suprised by how many sensible, perfectly nice people buy into the idea that they are somehow subsidising Scotland and paying for our public services. It's not their fault, it's an inevitable biproduct of the MSM's bitter together barrage.

# flyingscotsman 2012-12-17 11:36
Excellent article, when I first saw this I knew they were up to no good. The story went from anti-english to anti-british to white-on-white, happily changing it whenever it suited and to make it appear the same. The combinations of what races could have been involved in the white-on-white racism statistics number in the hundreds. Despicable.

The link to the Herald story is linking to the Daily Record story btw

So, the 1st ever Scot's Government is overseeing a reduction in racism, knife & gun crime, bigot attacks on the English & they have halted the falling population rates by massively increasing the number of people permanently living in Scotland? Here's how the British Broadcaster reported a 5% increase in Scottish population "England and Wales population up- 3%": www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18854073

Contrast that with the vile manner that the Scottish media dealt with the great news of a 5% increase- "POPULATION TIME BOMB": scotsman.com/.../...

Racism? perhaps. Bigotry? Most definitely.

A colleague quoted this very news report in the pub, banging on about SNP Anglophobes... I replied that 'White British' covers more than just English and quoted back an academic study from 10 years ago (turned into a book, 'Being English in Scotland' by Murray Watson) where the author found that although there was a perception of expecting racism (thanks to media sensationalism) , hardly any of the English people he interviewed had experienced it (as opposed to, say, Pakistanis, but that's another issue)... my colleague then made some disparaging comment about Nichola Sturgeon's personal appearance, laughed to himself, and turned to someone else and changed the subject of conversation. Comment continued below…

I hate no-one. No-one is my enemy despite extreme political views. All they can ever be are political adversaries and we conduct our affairs by rational and calm debate. All views and any view is valid.
To hate is destructive and self defeating. It is possible to be extremely hostile to a creation and the British State is just that. That the British State just happens to reside within the most populous country of the Union and represents in many of its outlets, all that is wrong with the Establishment.
If I hate anything it is the damage and the utter subservience that has been wraught on the Scots people by a country who by its represenatitves finds its smaller neighbour utterly distasteful at every level and worthy of only disdain.

On the subject of the Scottish media's inaccurate and deliberately misleading skewing of the "anti-ENglish" racist attacks stats, is anyone really surprised? No doubt the 3 Unionist Stooges will be quoting and using these inaccurate stats as an excuse to attack Alex Salmond and the SNP at the next FMQs. Shameful if they do, but then I don't think any of the No campaigners are capable of feeling shame.

In the interests of fairness I am sure we will see front page banner headlines to-morrow on this story.

A senior legal expert has challenged the opinion of the European Commission president over the status of an independent Scotland in the EU.

Professor Sir David Edward, a former European Court judge, believes that Scotland and the rest of the UK would be in a comparable position.

There would be no need for a new accession treaty, he argued.

Instead, negotiations prior to independence would result in amended EU treaties.

Writing on the Scottish Constitutional Futures website, Sir David examined both the view of those such as Mr Barroso, who has said a newly independent state would have to apply to join the EU, and that of nationalists who have argued that Scotland would simply continue as a member of the EU after independence.

I have just been reading again Jim Hunter's 'The making of the Crofting Community'. There is no group of people so vile as those Scots who are on the make and regard Scotland as too parochial for their aspirations viz. all those clan chiefs who first of all simply assumed ownership of clan lands and then fully adopted another country's mores, including the full 'public school' (sic) ethos. For clan chiefs the modern equivalent must surely be the Westminster apparachiks.

I heard that so-called statistician claiming that there had been a 1,700 increase in 'racist' attacks against English people in Scotland.

There are statisticians and statisticians. A few are honest and draw conclusions from the data they collect. Most have an axe to grind or a product to promote and make the figures fit their theory. The guy on 'Call Kaye' was one of the latter.

No one asked him to give chapter and verse as to what he defined as a 'racist anti-English attack' or what the figures were last year to justify his assertion that there had been a rise. If they were indeed English, they would probably have got a bop on the nose in their own country just as easily just for being obnoxious. The so-called statistician had been told, probably by some southern rag to make up some damning figures.

Merry Christmas yo' all, and more power to your elbow in the New Year.

Johann Lamont raises questions over free tuition policy

Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont has warned that publicly-funded higher education was "not viable" without a "serious" reduction in standards.

bbc.co.uk/.../...
---------------------------------------
I noticed that there was very brief mention of this on BBC Scotland tv but the Lamont speech (or even a few sentences) was not broadcast.

The web site page has not really got any policy details but lots of references to what she thinks is wrong.
The side bar is a load of nonsense about her personal life as a teacher.
Even the Blether WB page which has a playback interview with her which is dated March.

Was there nothing of importance to report or no BBC Scotland staff to attend the event.
Maybe the content and quality of the speech was not up to BBC standards.

Gone are the days when you could listen or watch BBC news items and read news articles in quality newspapers and be fairly confident that you were getting a reasonable facsimile of the truth without it being massively embellished with political opinion or bias.

If you wanted opinion you could read the Editor's opinion piece to get his/her slant or better still make up your own mind.

Nowadays we are subjected to a torrent of spin or as I prefer to call it, propaganda, from all airts in our establishment controlled media.

Thankfully the web is replacing the dead wood that the establishment media has become.

I will be happy when the last tree is felled and the last TV licence is ever issued for the embarrassing caricature that our MSM and BBC news has become.

This gross misrepresentati on by the media and BBC is utterly intolerable. We just can't allow this to continue.
Distorting the fact again, quite blatantly in order to mislead for political objectives this is appalling. If this had been happening in Eastern Europe by a state funded broadcaster the BBC would be declaring that this was a gross interference with democratic principles and would be insisting that it was interference in the ballot which would render the result invalid. We must insist that we will not allow this to happen to the Scottish people.

I am a Scot, yet I am also English: the product of a Glaswegian father and a Cumbrian mother. I am endowed with a Manchester/south Lancashire accent, which marks me out as English to those who do not know me.

Yet I encounter almost no hostility based upon my perceived identity. I have certainly not come across any anti-English sentiments from anyone in the Yes campaign or the SNP. On the contrary, any hostility has come from unionists who, when they discover that I am part-English, have often stated that this issue has nothing to do with me (when they discover my enthusiasm for self-determination). I have even been confronted by the question of "why do I hate my fellow-countrymen" by one unionist, just because I am sympathetic towards independence.

@ Sunshine on Crieff -Well said and glad to hear that your 'Corrie' (forgive me if I got the geography wrong)accent has caused you little problem in Scotland. I would be furious if it had!
Independence has nothing to do with where you were born, who your mum and dad are/were, or what accent you happen to have. Independence is about people who want to live in Scotland, have a vision of what an independent Scotland could achieve and what legacy they could leave to their children.

@ Sunshine on Crieff -Well said and glad to hear that your 'Corrie' (forgive me if I got the geography wrong)accent has caused you little problem in Scotland. I would be furious if it had!

'Corrie' is more or less correct, although the Glaswegian/Cumbrian influence did have an affect on our accents.

And your other sentiments reflect my experiences of pro-independence people. "A Scot is someone who calls Scotland home" - I think Alex Salmond said that, but similar things have emerged from thw Yes movement.

As I said, my father was a Scot, and our ancestors gave us a set of surnames that suggest we've been in Scotland for the duration. Yet I also qualify as a 'New Scot' through the other part of my heritage, a label I wear with pride.

The No side? They tell me that my family and friends in England and Wales will be 'foreigners', a ridiculous idea. It is they who push the idea of narrow nationalism.

Well today's interpretation of the census figures is that we are too old, senile and decrepit to be Independent. We have to be looked after by a younger, fitter and superior British Master Race.

The census figures are now being spun to run the residents of Scotland down again.

It begs the question who are the real racists? Or more acurately; Who are the real bigots?

Yes, this story had me shouting at BBC radio Scotland once again, At no time did the report mention England or English but that didn't stop BBC radio Scotland reporting it like fact. As the seconds counted down i waited for the inevitable connection between this report and the SNP/Scottish Independence, Kaye Adams didn't let me down. . BBC radio Scotland are so predictable now it makes me laugh. .

Your contribution to balancing the argument for Scotland's independence has been outstanding - the growth in your readership is testimony to that. How rewarding for Newsnet Scotland to see your credibility and support escalating as the readership of most of the hostile print media plummets.
When the history of the YES campaign is written, the arguments won and independence delivered Newsnet will be applauded as a central pillar of the campaign and the struggle. Congratulations and thanks is also due to the loyal and committed squad of regular and well informed posters who spice up the articles on a daily basis.
Enjoy a well earned break.

Scotland on Sunday Linked Alisdair Gray with the BNP, job done some Journos might think.
But not our intrepid Graham Spiers, calls himself a sports journalist.
Re. Monday's John Beattie’s lunch time show on Radio Scotland, one of the topic’s
was BBC’s Sports Personality of The Year. Spiersey managed to suggest that if you were
a supporter of the SNP you wouldn’t have enjoyed “SPOTY” the reason being that someone who is a supporter of the SNP doesn’t like English people.
His postulating went unchallenged.

Tell yer Pals

The telegraph is having a field day with this. Apparently all of the dreaded "cyber nats" are guilty of vile anti-English rhetoric, to even question this would be further proof of this.

I don't I have ever seen a anti-English comment on here or any of the other independence supporting blogs. Whereas if you go to the dailY mail, telegraph or even the bbc comments section in their articles, you will find dozens of anti-Scottish remarks within a few minutes. It is made even more amazing when the same people making the remarks actually accuse Scottish nationalists of being racists.

From the Scotsman (I know, I know - but I don't buy it anymore) 8th May 2012.
Extracts:
Dr Mark Shephard of Strathclyde University.
to the House of Commons "discourse on Scottish Independence - Politicians versus Publics"
"The findings based on analysis of online comments under articles on independence, show that the vast majority of posts are anti-SNP/independence and anti-Salmond rather than anti-English/anti-union. In terms of language too comments about the SNP and independence are much more vitriolic than about the union and UK" Spread far and wide!

Thanks for this article. I quoted your MacAskill quote in the Guardian, and then thought I'd better check this out myself. I found table 2b - and guess what, it's correct.

Sorry for doubting you, but I'm afraid I doubt all media these days. I made an extract of the data and it's included in my posting:

guardian.co.uk/.../20201073

Anyone is welcome to copy the fragment of data.
