The SNP aim to capitalise on Labour’s crumbling election campaign in these last few days before the country goes to the polls.  With figures showing the SNP back in a secure second place after the LibDems debate boost faded, leader Alex Salmond will kick off the last week of campaigning by appearing in the BBC’s Scottish leaders debate tonight at 21:00.

The SNP leader has opted to appear after the party’s bid to be included in the last of the main debates alongside Cameron, Brown and Clegg was rejected.  The exposure afforded the three London party leaders has led to the SNP being marginalised in the media coverage.  However the SNP leader has promised to counter the broadcasting exclusions with the most active ground campaign in Scotland.

After the debate Mr Salmond will embark on a whistle stop tour of Scottish constituencies including Dundee West, Ochil, Stirling and Falkirk.

Mr Salmond said:
"The next few days present a massive opportunity for the SNP and for Scotland. The whole basis of Labour's campaign in Scotland has unravelled as their campaign collapses south of the border and voters desert them.

"Their entire strategy in Scotland has been based on stopping the Tories by returning a Labour Government at Westminster, but now that they are obviously a busted flush at UK level their Scottish vote is extremely vulnerable.

"The SNP is best placed to seize on that vulnerability, because we have moved back into a clear second place in the Scottish opinion polls, overtaking the LibDems after the temporary bounce they got from the TV leaders' debates."

The First Minister added: "The LibDems have not been able to sustain that advantage here in Scotland and their support is now evaporating. The SNP is the now party which is best placed to make a real surge in the final days of the campaign and our sights are set on catching Labour. We were shut out of the air war but our ground campaign in the next few days will be the most active in Scotland.

"We are asking the voters who are deserting Labour not just to sit at home, but to come out and vote for SNP local and national champions who will help protect their communities and the country as a whole from the savage cuts agenda of all the London parties.

"Labour, the Tories and the Liberals all plan to slash funding to vital public services in Scotland. But it is now a near certainty that there will be a balanced parliament, which will mean that every single vote in the House of Commons will count.

"That means a strong bloc of SNP MPs, along with our Welsh allies in Plaid Cymru, can help protect our nations from the cuts agenda of the London parties. In the last few days of this campaign, there is everything to play for in Scotland - and if Scots voters want a balanced parliament, redolent with opportunity for Scotland, they should vote SNP."

The time is now. Get out there supporters and help - put up an SNP window sticker, laminate one and tie it to your street lamp (it's a few pence), deliver leaflets, offer supporter friends who may need it a lift to the polling station.

Put on your smarter jacket and lets show the nation how much support there is for the SNP and that they are the ones to back. Vote SNP, for a voice backing Scotland at Westminster. Don't accept the status quo as it will become the future. Contrary to the TV debates' message, there is a choice - believing there isn't and 'they're all the same' is why many voters think there is no point in casting their vote. But there is. Vote for a different voice, Scotland's.

The Greens with 2 MSPs secured policy inclusions in the Scottish budget at Holyrood...

Your local campaign coordinator will no doubt welcome gladly all help. Now's the time to do it. There's a few days before the polls - when many voters make up their minds. Lets go...

Good, I will watch this debate now, I would like to see more of Mr Salmond in this election campaign.
I am also expecting the other three parties to get a free ride as Glenn Campbell tries to do what he seems to think his job is, which is to cut across whatever anyone from the SNP is saying.
Incidentally, to which poll is the reference in this article?

Good luck to the SNP in this election, you're going to need it, remember that a cornered, wounded animal is the most dangerous. NuLiebore will be pulling out all the stops to prevent total meltdown at the polls. That includes their usual lies in their pamphlets, falsified postal votes, ballot box stuffing and disappearing ballots of opponents. All activists and party members will have to be extra vigilant to prevent a rerun of the Glenrothes fiasco.

I don't think Salmond should necessarily be attacking only Labour tonight Tom. What lies ahead on Thursday for Scotland in the outcome of the UK Elections, if polls are right, does not bear thinking about. The Guardian and the Observer are backing Clegg on the basis of 270 minutes on TV! Can you believe that? And much of the anti-Brown stuff in the media is because, to quote a Times poll "We don't want a Scot running the UK." That isn't politics. Its sheer racism and it is unhealthy no matter what you think of Brown. Salmond needs to remind Scotland that Clegg and Cameron will take all Scotland gives when it comes to hard cash to the Treasury and in turn will treat us as something they have just wiped off their shoe. WE are the "great ignored" to quote Cameron the other week. And after Thursday they will continue to take what we put into the Union from oil and the rest but we will still not count. This will impact on EVERY voter in Scotland. So I for one hope Salmond doesn't focus only on Labour tonight. This whole issue is so much more important than that.

PS I also think Alex can show others tonight that the SNP know how to do consensus politics and are not afraid of functioning in an environment where the electoral set up is designed to reflect fairly the choices Scots make when they cast their vote in Scottish Parliamentary Elections.

Four parties: two choices.

Looking forward to tonight! After Murphy's outburst about pub audiences last week I hope he gets a hard time from Alex!
Here's hoping Alex deals really well with Campbell, the poorest political interviewer I have had the misfortune to listen to!
All the best Alex Salmond!

If it means putting the boot into murphy with every bit of news that the msm won`t cover, tough! it`s time!

Independence should be at the forefront of offering something different,i don`t know how much i`m in debt being british but i know it would a damn site less being in an Independent Scotland.

Bring it on!
