A poll for The Independent newspaper shows the LibDems have slumped to their lowest ever UK rating.

The survey is a weighted average of the regular surveys by ComRes, ICM, Ipsos MORI and YouGov, and puts the party on just 11% - which is their lowest level since 1988 when the party was formed.

The singer-songwriter and former Humblebum was admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in November last year with suspected liver failure. He is known to have received treatment for liver failure in the past.

The coalition Government's proposed Scotland Bill stands out for its sheer perversity. The Government's case for the Bill is that it will increase the accountability of the Scottish Parliament to the Scottish people. But its main component – giving the Scottish Parliament the power to set its own income tax rate balanced by a cut in the Treasury's annual block grant equivalent to 50% of the yield in Scotland from the going rate of UK income tax – will by itself neither increase nor decrease the level of the Parliament's accountability to its public.

Scottish Labour’s Iain Gray, has sparked an international row after accusing the peaceful European nation of Montenegro of being involved in “war crimes and ethnic cleansing” on its road to independence.

According to the Scottish Daily Express, the London based Embassy of Montenegro has now written to the East Lothian MSP accusing him of making “incorrect” claims and demanding an explanation.

Three weeks today, Tommy Sheridan will go to prison. Only the length of the sentence remains in doubt. A term of four or five years is widely predicted, in which case the former leader of the Scottish Socialist Party can expect to be released in January or July 2013. But the case looks far from over: Mr Sheridan continues to protest his innocence and says he is planning an appeal.

So the latest measure to save the UK economy from collapse has been rolled out by the ConDem coalition government in London. Everything consumers buy - except most food products, prescription drugs, baby's clothing, passenger transport and books - will now be taxed by the UK treasury at 20 percent - a rise of 2.5 percent from 17.5 percent.

Labour’s leader in the Scottish parliament Iain Gray has come under increasing pressure to apologise for the “ethnic cleansing” remark he made that has caused a diplomatic row with Montenegro.

The SNP’s Angus Robertson has called on the Labour leader to apologise to the peoples of Montenegro and Scotland for what he claimed was an example of Mr Gray’s “international ignorance”.  Labour's East Lothian MSP linked the gaining of independence for Montenegro with ethnic cleansing, war crimes and world wars.

With 2010 over and our retrospective look now gathering dust along with the rest of the Scottish news from last year, what can we expect as we enter 2011 and what might prove to be a seminal year in Scotland’s long and controversial political history?

Last year ended with support for the Union and calls for independence running neck and neck.  At 44 per cent and 40 per cent respectively, the 16 per cent who have yet to make up their minds will be the focus for those making the argument.
