Big Business and its warnings of a Yes Armageddon

So LLoyds Banking Group, Barclays and Shell have joined RBS and Standard Life to warn that Scottish independence could destabilise business.
 
Lloyds annual report fears an independent Scotland might have a poorer credit rating than the rest of the UK so the cost of borrowing on international markets might rise.  A bit rich you might think, coming from a company whose disastrous management has meant massive borrowing from the domestic taxpayer – but let’s leave that to one side.

Duggy Dug IV – Europe: We’re in and we’re stayin’ in

  This is our fourth installment of the Duggy Dug series of animated cartoons aimed at bringing a bit of colour and humour to the independence debate.  In this episode we see Duggy explain just why Scotland will remain a member of the European Union after independence, contrary to claims from those who would suggest otherwise.

As Duggy makes clear, Scotland is already a member of the EU and a Yes vote will simply allow us to continue that membership and become a member in our own right.  Claims that Spain will block Scotland’s membership are similarly dealt with by wee Duggy and his Barcelona friend Pep.

Will the real No campaign please stand up

Jose Manuel Barroso, Bob Dudley and David Nish – three men who have dominated recent media coverage of the independence referendum.  They are the heads of the European Commission, BP and Standard Life respectively.
 
Vaclav Klaus, Joelle Garriaud-Maylam, Michael O’Leary and Willie Walsh – four people who haven’t featured quite as much, indeed if at all in some cases.

We’re leaving Scotland – A look behind the big business scares

Recently a few UK businesses have decided to enter the independence debate.  Their annual reports contained a nod to this September’s referendum – some a little more than a nod.
 
In truth most were pretty anodyne and the statements were less about entering the debate on independence and more about satisfying a requirement to acknowledge there was a possibility that Scots could indeed vote to end the Union.

Newsnet Scotland … the final stretch

  We’re officially into the last 200 days of the referendum campaign, so it’s time to let our readers know where we are and what we plan as we move forward to the referendum itself.

This time last year the site was attracting around 80,000 unique visitors each month.  In the space of twelve months we have increased our readership by an impressive 60,000 and are now on course to reach over 150,000 unique visitors in March – the first six days of this month has witnessed over 38,000 unique visitors.

Ailsa McKay 1963-2014

What a shock today to Google the name of Ailsa McKay and to find she had died in the last 24 hours. I wanted to get in touch about an interview with her and didn’t realise she was so poorly. Such a grounded and committed woman to lose at any time but with Scotland in political turmoil her presence was like a rock. My condolences go to her family.

Johnny Foreigner

The First Minister says we won’t be foreigners if we are independent. Speak for yourself, Mr Salmond. Who wants to be part of a country that deliberately legislates for poverty, wrecks lives, campaigns for the wealthy and closes its doors to Scotland?
 
If it means severing our links with the austerity merchants of London, I demand to be foreign. If it means no more illegal wars, I scream that I am from a foreign land. And if it brings social justice instead of embedded inequality, then call me Johnny Foreigner. I will be foreign to the Little Englanders and proud of it too.

Newsnet Scotland was launched on 12th March 2010 by unpaid volunteers from Greenock. The site was set up in order to address what we believed to be an imbalance in the reporting of Scottish News and Current Affairs.

A not for profit organisation we support major constitutional change for Scotland whether it be full fiscal autonomy, Devolution-Max or full independence.

The Newsnet Scotland team includes:

Lynda Williamson – Lynda joined the Newsnet project in early 2011. Lynda divides her time between looking after her family, her small business and Newsnet Scotland.

Writing
Paul Kavanagh – Paul is fluent in Spanish and speaks reasonable Catalan, allowing us to report on developments in Spain. He has a long-standing interest in Scottish languages.

Bob Duncan – Bob writes extensively for Newsnet and has written news pieces as well as opinion pieces.

Lynn Malone – Lynn is a freelance journalist and also Newsnet Scotland's features editor.
