Guilty of bias by omission

Independence is an opportunity to create a wealthier, healthier Scotland

Mrs Margaret Thatcher was the basic cause of the descent into drink and drugs of the old Scottish male working class, according to Alex Neil, health secretary in the Scottish government, during a speech at the weekend. 

By robbing them of their jobs in the traditional heavy industries she also took away their sense of personal worth, and they chose the only way out available to the communities which had shaped them and which they had shaped.

Immigration – The difference between Scotland and the UK

This week the UK Parliament passed the immigration Bill. It is a nasty, pernicious, rotten bill that will charge migrants for health services and turn those who rent homes in the private rented sector into immigration officers.

Not quite satisfied with that, the Government tabled further amendments  to allow the Home secretary to strip UK citizens of their citizenship and further erode our rights under the European Convention of Human Rights.

Honour and dishonour

Thatcher’s former Governor General of Scotland, Ian Lang, made a wee speech in the House of Lords in which he said that Scottish independence would dishonour all those who had fought and died in the UK’s assorted wars.

As far as I can discover, Ian Lang has never seen active service in the military.  Instead he’s made a very lucrative career for himself in Tory politics, followed by his pretendy Lordy title and a series of directorships.

WHO made the following positive statements about the potential of a currency union between an independent Scotland and rUK?

“…it eliminates the transactions costs associated with using, and switching between, different currencies…Sharing a currency can promote investment by reducing uncertainty about currency movements and giving businesses access to deeper, more liquid financial markets… Sharing a currency can also help to increase the mobility of labour and capital, raise trade in goods and services, and improve the flow of technology and ideas.”

Three Blind Wolves – Celtic Connections: A Review

Even the noisy gaggle at the bar ssshhhed each other when frontman Ross Clark stopped playing his guitar and stepped out from the mic with aching a capella ‘I am the one you left behind. Pick me up before you leave’. Every word sang with gut wrenching sincerity.

It was a mother from England complaining that her daughter had been bullied at school in Fife by someone telling her to go back to her own country. Gordon Brown was involved and it was linked to the referendum.

Scotland International: A Letter from Istanbul

Europe from its edges, corners and fuzzy borderlands looks and feels rather different than it does from elsewhere.

Here in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, Scotland’s debate and the UK’s never-ending turmoil with regard to its relationship with Europe, seems far removed.

Yet what is striking is that there are commonalities between these examples as I contemplate life looking at the shores of the Bosphorus – that historic meeting and clashing point of cultures, and the crossroads between Europe and Asia.

Newsnet Scotland was launched on 12th March 2010 by unpaid volunteers from Greenock. The site was set up in order to address what we believed to be an imbalance in the reporting of Scottish News and Current Affairs.

A not for profit organisation we support major constitutional change for Scotland whether it be full fiscal autonomy, Devolution-Max or full independence.

Lynda Williamson – Lynda joined the Newsnet project in early 2011. Lynda divides her time between looking after her family, her small business and Newsnet Scotland.

Paul Kavanagh – Paul is fluent in Spanish and speaks reasonable Catalan, allowing us to report on developments in Spain. He has a long-standing interest in Scottish languages.
