Who’d want to share anything with this lot?

My position has not changed…I thought Carney was measured and fair, giving benefits (which as I said earlier he rushed through at the start but that wasn’t what the mainstream media types were after) and he gave an objective assessment of potential obstacles and compromises.

The only question I have about his effort was in trying to compare the Eurozone with the UK.  He missed the key point about the problems with the euro – that it was attempting to tie together disparate economies with totally different approaches to tax and spend.

All academics are respected, but some are more respected than others

Last week a respected academic appeared on STV and BBC.  Professor John Curtice was talking about the latest survey on social attitudes.
 
The Scottish Social Attitudes survey was carried by every news outlet in Scotland, its findings deemed crucial to the independence debate.  Interviews and articles accompanied the latest poll and Professor Curtice enjoyed yet more media attention.

Workers face stark choices

ICM, YouGov, ComRes … We’re learning something interesting

Most of you will have seen the headline data from the latest ICM poll on Referendum Yes 37%, No 44%, Don’t Know 19%.  On European election voting intention – it’s SNP 43%, Lab 24%, Con 14%, UKIP 7%, LD 6%, Green 4% respectively.
 
Interestingly, in England & Wales, pollsters ComRes report that Tory and Labour are neck and neck at 33% support each, while YouGov have the Labour lead in GB down to 2%.

Pariah or Partner: Scotland and the European Union

Scotland’s relationship with the European Union following a YES vote in September’s independence referendum continues to gain traction in the campaign.  This is hardly surprising since those arguing for the status quo appear convinced that EU membership is a weak point in YES Scotland’s case; and inconveniently for those advocating change, the issue will only be settled definitively through agreement after a YES vote.

Didn’t He Do Well?

Dr John Robertson of UWS acquitted himself rather well on Radio Scotland this morning [Saturday] in defending his Fairness in the First Year report on broadcasting and in the process made the BBC look small.
 
After listening to Dr Robertson, whom I’ve never met, I was left wondering what the BBC was afraid of. He didn’t rant. He didn’t accuse. He appreciated the pressures of newsgathering. He isn’t a Nat. He sounded surprised at his own findings and had expected them to be viewed as helpful.

Witch hunts, and who’s afraid of who

The Daily Mail has embarked on a witch hunt of “evil cybernats”.  It’s the same old story from a publication which panders to the basest instincts of the uneducated and the willfully misinformed, it’s only the target which has changed.
 
Back in the early 1980s, during the Aids hysteria, an acquaintance was outed by a newspaper.  It was one of the usual suspects given to demonising innocent and powerless members of the public, either the Daily Mail or the Express, I can’t remember which now.

Newsnet Scotland was launched on 12th March 2010 by unpaid volunteers from Greenock. The site was set up in order to address what we believed to be an imbalance in the reporting of Scottish News and Current Affairs.

A not for profit organisation we support major constitutional change for Scotland whether it be full fiscal autonomy, Devolution-Max or full independence.

Lynda Williamson – Lynda joined the Newsnet project in early 2011. Lynda divides her time between looking after her family, her small business and Newsnet Scotland.

Paul Kavanagh – Paul is fluent in Spanish and speaks reasonable Catalan, allowing us to report on developments in Spain. He has a long-standing interest in Scottish languages.

Bob Duncan – Bob writes extensively for Newsnet and has written news pieces as well as opinion pieces.
